FOR PATIENTS ON COMPOUNDED GLP-1

Thinking about switching from compounded to brand-name?

Brand-name Zepbound, Foundayo, and Wegovy are now similarly priced to compounded tirzepatide or semaglutide for most patients — with the safety, dosing consistency, and regulatory clarity that only FDA-approved medication provides.

No payment required to start. Works with or without insurance.

Why patients are switching

The compounded GLP-1 market grew rapidly during the 2023–2024 semaglutide shortage. With brand supply restored and FDA enforcement increasing, the calculus has changed.

Brand pricing has dropped dramatically

LillyDirect now offers Zepbound at $299/mo for starter doses — matching what compounders charge for compounded tirzepatide. Foundayo (oral) starts at $149/mo. Wegovy via NovoCare Pharmacy runs $199-399/mo. The gap between compounded and brand has narrowed or closed for most patients.

FDA enforcement is tightening

The FDA has issued multiple warning letters to compounded GLP-1 providers in 2025 and 2026, including dosing errors, fraudulent labels, and unapproved chemical forms. Several large compounded GLP-1 telehealth companies have received FDA warning letters about misleading marketing. The regulatory window that let compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide flourish during the 2023-2024 shortage is closing.

Supply reliability

If your compounding pharmacy stops making your medication — whether from FDA pressure, supply-chain issues, or business changes — you could face a gap in treatment mid-titration. Brand-name medication comes from the manufacturer's own supply chain with none of that risk.

Insurance coverage you may not know about

Many patients default to cash-pay compounded without checking whether their insurance covers brand-name. Plans that cover Wegovy or Zepbound for weight loss are more common than they used to be. With savings cards applied, covered patients often pay as little as $25/mo for Zepbound/Foundayo or $0/mo for Wegovy — less than any compounded option.

Dosing consistency and safety testing

Brand-name medication is FDA-approved with verified dosing, sterility, and manufacturing standards. Compounded versions vary in potency and quality — the FDA has specifically flagged dosing errors and contamination in compounded GLP-1 products.

How brand pricing compares

How the transition works

1

Complete our 5-minute intake

Tell us your current medication, dose, and history. You can pick whether you want us to verify insurance (most affordable path) or skip straight to cash-pay for simplicity.

2

Provider review within 24-48 hours

A licensed nurse practitioner or physician in your state reviews your intake and determines the best brand-name option given your dose, side-effect history, and preferences.

3

We handle the paperwork

If insured: we verify coverage, enroll you in the manufacturer's savings program, and handle prior authorization if needed. If cash-pay: we route your prescription directly to LillyDirect or NovoCare Pharmacy.

4

Your medication ships (or gets ready for pickup)

LillyDirect and NovoCare ship cold-chain to your door. If you're using insurance plus a retail pharmacy, we send the Rx electronically to the location you choose.

Common questions about switching

Can I switch mid-dose, or do I have to start over?

In most cases you can transition at or near your current dose without restarting titration — your provider will review your current regimen and recommend the best bridge. Switching between tirzepatide products (compounded tirzepatide to Zepbound) is usually most seamless. Switching classes (tirzepatide to semaglutide, or vice versa) may require some re-titration to manage side effects.

Will my insurance cover the brand-name version?

Coverage varies widely. Zepbound and Wegovy are covered on many commercial plans with prior authorization; some plans require you to try generic alternatives first. Medicare generally does not cover GLP-1s for weight loss. During intake you can choose to have us verify coverage before your provider finalizes your prescription.

What if my insurance doesn't cover brand-name?

You can skip insurance entirely and go direct-pay through LillyDirect (Zepbound or Foundayo) or NovoCare Pharmacy (Wegovy). Pricing is published and transparent — you know exactly what you'll pay each month. For Foundayo (oral tablet), cash-pay can be $149/mo, comparable to compounded. For injectable Zepbound and Wegovy, cash-pay is higher but within the same range as many compounded options.

Is there any risk in switching?

Brand-name medications have the same or stronger clinical evidence than compounded versions — the active ingredients are identical, and brand-name undergoes rigorous FDA safety testing. The main adjustment is typically minor: dose timing, injection technique (if switching from vial to pen), or tolerating the different inactive ingredients. Your provider manages this transition.

How long does the transition take?

From intake to your first brand-name shipment: typically 3-7 days for cash-pay, 7-14 days for insurance (allowing time for benefits verification and any prior authorization). If you're running low on your compounded supply, let your provider know and they'll expedite.

Can I stay on compounded and use Valitide for provider care?

Valitide prescribes only FDA-approved brand-name medications. We don't write compounded prescriptions. If you want to continue on a compounded regimen, you'd need to stay with your existing compounded provider.
